Category:Windows-only softwareAs the clock ticks closer to the deadline for the sale of the NDP government’s last share of Hydro One, the new Liberal leader argues that he will honour the commitments made by both the party and Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals to sell the telecoms giant.
“I intend to honour that commitment,” said Tim Hudak on Thursday as he spoke to the Financial Post’s editorial board. “If they want to do something else, that’s their prerogative.”
Hudak was critical of Wynne’s Liberal government during his tenure as the Leader of the Opposition, but now his party will be in the position to either kill the deal or implement it. The sale of the utility, which would give the province an estimated $1.6 billion, was one of Wynne’s signature election pledges.
“We made a promise and we are going to keep the promise and we’re going to honour it,” said Hudak.
“It’s not an easy thing, and it’s not a freebie. … There are millions of dollars at stake, there’s public money at stake, there are people’s jobs that are involved in this.”
In June of last year, the Liberal government told the Independent Electricity System Operator to proceed with a public auction for the sale of the province’s remaining stake in the utility.
Wynne’s decision to go ahead with the sale was welcomed by the unions that had grown concerned about the long-term stability of the province’s electricity system. Critics questioned whether the deal would be beneficial for the province’s finances.
